Georgia On My Mind

A farmer’s tractor is silhouetted against a south Georgia sunset.  Georgia is called the Peach State, and on the day this photo was taken the western sky took on a definite peach color over the pastoral farmlands of the state.

A majestic Tiger Swallowtail butterfly visits a flowering bush at Sandy Creek Park near Athens, GA.  The park is a favorite summertime spot for folks from the area.  In the photo at right, the lady in the lake is Joy,  enjoying a magical mermaid moment  at the park.  Georgia is the largest state in land area east of the Mississippi River, and the state’s varied topography includes mountains, forests and seashores.  Old rural houses  and roadside fruit and vegetable stands like those pictured here are part of the state’s charm.   Georgia  woodlands and trails at the State Botanical Garden near Athens invite visitors at any season.

Joy took this photo of me when we stopped  on a trip through rural Georgia to help a tortoise across the road lest, in the words of the Georgia poet Ed Weeks,  “Some car might come hurtling and swiftly end your days of turtling.” In the other shots,  Joy beams for the camera after our turtle rescue,  a summer  woodland is bathed in afternoon sunlight at the Botanical Garden near Athens,  and springtime strollers enjoy  the lake and trees at Atlanta’s Piedmont Park.

Halloween’s a Howl in Athens, GA!

Jumping  Jack-o-Lanterns!  Ciara the cat is ready for  an Athens, GA Halloween  in the photo above left.  In the other pix, kids from the Five Points neighborhood in Athens gather Trick or Treat candy in a scene reminiscent of Norman  Rockwell’s paintings,  a slapstick Satan parties at a downtown watering hole, and Joy and I have Halloween fun as Babbitt Businessman and the Good Witch.
